Form 8843 is required for exchange visitors and dependents who were in the US as NRAs under nonimmigrant status in the J category in the prior year, even they received no income.

• Form 8843 is not a tax return
• Required even if a US income tax return is not filed
• Residents are not required to file IRS Form 8843
• SSN or ITIN is required on Form 8843
• Not required for Residents or Resident Aliens

If no income was earned in the tax year, Form 8843 is due by June 15, 2023. If income was earned in the tax year, this form is due by April 18, 2023 along with the returns.
