After being accepted to a BridgeUSA J-1 Exchange Visitor by a designated sponsor and issued Form DS-2019 and SEVIS ID, prospective exchange visitors will apply for a J-1 visa at a US embassy or consulate (Canadians apply for J-1 status at a US port of entry).
J-1 visa applicants may check their nonimmigrant visa application status via the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC).
In order to use the CEAC Status Check, the J-1 visa applicant would need to enter the CEAC barcode (or application ID) from their Form DS-160 confirmation page. The CEAC barcode starts with AA followed by 8 digits.

Examples of CEAC results and explanations.

“Application receipt” pending means that your has been received but your application has yet been processed into the visa system – this status may remain until your interview, or your application is ready for review.

“Application received” means that your application is undergoing review (mail-in) or your application has been received (check back after two days) - this status may also apply to cases awaiting additional documentation.

“Issued” means that your visa has been issued.

“Administrative Processing” means that additional information and/or documents are required to to help establish your eligibility for a visa - this processing time varies based on individual circumstances which can take up to 60 days to resolve.

“Refused” Your visa application has been refused. While some decisions are permanent, some can be overturned by submitting additional evidence or a waiver.
