What to wear?

Much like in NYC, there is a wide spectrum of weather patterns present in Chicago. Temperatures can be as low as 22 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter, and as high as 82 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer. Besides the oscillation between weather extremes, there are phenomenons, known as derechos, which can occur in the region. These are wind storms that can sometimes give way to tornados and other kinds of severe weather.

• Spring temperatures vary wildly and thunderstorms are more common during this time

This winter weather in Chicago can persist well into the spring, although this season is more known for erratic weather patterns. It is essential to come prepared with winter clothing such as heavy jackets, boots, and gloves. In the summertime, wear lighter clothing to mitigate the effects of the hot weather.

Where to live?

Serving as the midpoint between East and West in the United States, Chicago is a melting pot of culture. Rents here are typically above $2,000 a month, as one might expect of a big city. For less expensive options, consider sub-leasing, sharing an apartment with others, or outlying areas.

• Lincoln Park is the ideal neighborhood for people who love the outdoors. Gardens, lily ponds, lakefront green spaces, and even a free zoo all create a connection with nature. There are well loved local establishments, serving anything from food to music. Apartments make up the majority of dwellings here.

• Serving as Chicago’s downtown area, the Loop is every bit as energetic as other bustling metropolises. Street provides incredible dining and shopping options for those so inclined. Lovers of the arts will appreciate the Theatre District, which hosts a plethora of shows new and old.

• West Town is an up-and-coming neighborhood that is perhaps the artsiest in Chicago. Paintings and other works are on full display here, whether in galleries or on the streets themselves. Beer lovers have access to a number of local craft breweries.

• River North: This neighborhood is the heart of the nightlife in Chicago, with clubs and bars that run until the early morning. Live music of all types can be found in the various establishments, and art can be found proudly displayed on the streets. For dining options, there are a few renowned steakhouses among other excellent choices.

How to get around?

Chicago’s transit is run by the Chicago Transit Authority(CTA). With 129 bus routes and numerous elevated train lines, it ranks as the 2nd largest transit system in the country.

Bus riders can elect to pay their fare with cash, being charged $2.50. Alternatively, riders can use a Ventra card for any bus or train (fares can range from $2.25 to $2.50). The CTA offers both bus and rail services to their passengers. For more, click HERE.

For travel to the surrounding Chicago area, one can take the Metra commuter rail system. There are also 12 Amtrak lines at Chicago Union Station, allowing you to get anywhere in the nation. There are a plethora of bus services as well.
