2010-04-09 - Many students asked, 'what the heck is the SAB?' No, it is not 'Super Action Beta' or 'Summer Apple Banana.' SAB stands for the Student Advisory Board. It is an initiative encouraging students to take an active role in their internship experience in New York.

The board is comprised of three teams: the Core Team, the Editorial Team and the Implementation Team. Student participants of the program are welcome to join one or more of the teams. To join, email ccip@fusia.net.

The board meets every Saturday at 9PM to discuss a range of topics pertinent to students. So far, the board has met three times and has finalized its structure. The board is still discussing the activity plan and is seeking input from other SAB members. If you have any idea, please join next Saturday's SAB meeting (April 17, 9PM, Beijing Time) for another brainstorming session.

Note that the board has not finalized any Session A initiatives. Current initiatives include the following. Please feel free to add to the existing ideas.

Cultural Village at the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York (Session B)

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York (http://www.hkdbf-ny.org/) is a sporting and multicultural event held on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park annually. This year, the festival will take place on August 7 and 8. FUSIA, a creative sponsor of the festival, is entitled a racing boat (under the sponsorship division) and a booth.

FUSIA will donate its booth to the program for running cross-cultural activities organized by the students. The current idea is to develop different arts and crafts workshops that allow the students to display their culture through interactions with children (imagine a booth of 3-4 tables with each one acting as a site for each activity) . Examples include teaching children how to write their names in Chinese with brushstrokes and how to do traditional papercut. Products will be framed and spectators will be charged the price of the materials.

Another board member supported the idea of selling cultural products. He will do more research for product ideas.

East Meets West Cultural and Professional Exchange (Session B)

Carrying on the East Meets West theme, the 'East meets West Cultural and Professional Exchange' is one of the signature events of the program. Taking place during and run by students attending the second session, the event serves to inspire appreciation of the host companies; provide professional networking opportunities, and promote the positive image and business opportunities in the overseas Asian market.

The event will take place on a weekday evening (e.g. from 5PM to 8PM) and begin with short speeches given by the host companies, sharing their experiences of taking on interns from Asia and working with the program.

Event venue to be discussed. Ideally the venue can accommodate 100 to 150 people. The guest list includes media representatives; previous and existing host company representatives; companies interested in the program but weren't be to participate this year; company heads, community leaders, and etc.

Intern Journal (Both Session A and B)

Wouldn't it be nice to have a place where you can share everything that you have learned and experienced from the internship, as well as show appreciation to those who have helped you along the way? How about having a place to see the comments and tips from host companies?

Produced by the Editorial Team of SAB with the help of other student participants, the Intern Journal was conceived to gather all the memories of the 2010 program. It will be published after the program and distributed electronically (e.g. website and/or ebook).
