After successfully completing their exchange program, J-1 visa holders have the option to remain in the US for up to 30 days. This is known as the “grace period” and is provided by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Grace Period (Grace Period)

The 30-day grace period allows J-1 visa holders to stay in the US for an additional 30 days after their program ends. It is intended for participants to settle their affairs and prepare to return to their home countries. They cannot work or continue exchange activities during this period.

Don’ts
• Engage in training activities as stated on Form DS-7002
• Work/intern
• Cross US borders and expect to re-enter using the same exchange visa
• Apply for a new visa within the US

Do’s
• Use this time to travel and explore the US
• Say goodbye to American friends
• Close any outstanding affairs before going home
• Leave the US with 30 days
• Make plans for your future after returning home

Grace Period (Grace Period)

The 30-day grace period begins after the end date on a J-1 visa holder’s Form DS-2019. During this time, participants are no longer in J-visa status and fall under the jurisdiction of the USCIS. The grace period ends when exchange visitors depart the US.

1 The J-1 and F-1 grace periods are different. F-1 students may remain in the US for up to 60 days beyond their program period, while J-1 visa holders have a 30-day grace period.

2 The grace period only applies to exchange visitors who successfully complete their program. It does not apply to those whose SEVIS record has been terminated by their sponsor or whose program has been shortened/canceled without authorization.

3 After the grace period ends, participants cannot re-enter the US using their J-1 visa sponsored by FUSIA unless they have valid ESTA status or a visitor visa. Exchange visitors who wish to visit a bordering country should do so while their exchange program is still in effect before their visa expires.

4 If J-1 visa holders overstay their grace period, they will begin to accrue unlawful presence in the US. This can have serious consequences for their future ability to enter the US. If they accrue more than 180 days of unlawful presence, they may be barred from entering the US for 3 years. If they accrue more than 365 days of unlawful presence, they may be barred from entering the US for 10 years. It is important for participants to depart the US before their grace period ends to avoid these consequences. It is also recommended that participants schedule their departure earlier rather than waiting until the last day of their grace period to counter unexpected situations such as losing a passport.
