#17-124Department of State (DOS)PDFReturnURL
This section identifies the United States government agencies and departments that the exchange visitors may interact with throughout their BridgeUSA J-1 EVP program.
The US Department of State (DOS or the State Department) is an executive department of the US federal government led by the Secretary of State. It leads America in foreign policy issues, negotiates treaties and agreements with foreign entities, represents the US at the United Nations, and more.
The DOS consists of bureaus and offices that cover an array of functions. Most of them report to Under Secretaries; some report directly to the Secretary of State or the Deputy Secretary of State.

As examples, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) reports to the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, and the Bureau of Consular Affairs reports to the Under Secretary of Management.

BridgeUSA (J-1 visa) Exchange Visitor Program is administered by the DOS’s ECA, which designates progarm sponsors (e.g., FUSIA) and issues visas at US consulates and embassies.
