Columbia University, one of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions, is a private Ivy League research university in Upper Manhattan. Students toured the campus and attended an information session on the full-time MBA program opportunities at the Columbia Business School.

Yu & Associates is an award-winning consulting engineering firm that provides site/civil, planning, geotechnical and environmental services. Students visited the New Jersey-based firm to meet with the president and key staff members to learn about civil engineering operations, team structure management, industry career prospects, and the vital qualities of a leader.

CCIP concludes the summer sessions with an annual farewell dinner for students, staff, and special guests, including representatives from the local government. This year, NYC Councilmember Peter Koo spoke, and the students presented what they had learned and experienced during their time in the US.

Since it was founded in 1999, First American International Bank has specifically served the Chinese-American immigrant population in New York City. Students met with the former president and CEO of the bank and also saw a presentation on banking operations and the bank history, which included insights into the industry and clientele.

Former New York State Senator Tony Avella has had a distinguished public service career as a civic activist and politician, including being a member of the New York City Council from 2002 to 2009, and serving in the state senate from 2011 to 2019. The students met with Avella who discussed his career-long fight for working and middle-class families.

Opened in 1928 and situated in Jamaica in the heart of Queens, the Jamaica YMCA has a rich history told through diverse cultures. The students attended a presentation given by the executive director, Cedric Dew, on the operations of a large-size nonprofit organization and his personal experiences with professional engagement and relationship building. They also saw how a branch works with the administrative office, other branches, and the community of Jamaica.

Padilla & Company is a Filipino-owned CPA firm with a culturally diverse staff specializing in nonprofit accounting, auditing, tax, and payroll for various businesses. Students met with Padilla’s senior staff to learn about its day-to-day operations and the challenges of running a CPA firm in New York City.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has served as the junior US Senator from New York since 2009 and was previously a member of the US House of Representatives. Students toured Gillibrand’s district office in New York and met with Brook Gesser, senior advisor for the senator, who discussed the daily operations of a US senator’s office as well as important aspects of governance, including constituent relations, the process of turning a bill into law, and parliamentary procedure.

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York, representing the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, promotes closer business and cultural links between Hong Kong and the 31 eastern states of the United States. Joanne Chu, the director of HKETO-NY, gave a presentation on the roles and functions of her office, and also provided insights for pursuing a civil service career in the government.

House of Marley specializes in audio speakers and accessories with the support from the family members of the late reggae icon, Bob Marley. Students met with designers who discussed the in-house graphic designs for commercial businesses, social media strategies, and real-life applications.

Admerasia is an award-winning ad agency specializing in multicultural advertising, with a client list that includes McDonald’s, PayPal, Citibank, Nissan, and more. During their visit, students gained insights into New York City’s extensive, multicultural advertising industry.

Aithent is an information technology company based in Manhattan’s Financial District. Students met with an Aithent executive and learned about the company’s core business, IT development, and potential career paths in the field.

Fred Teng, President of the America China Public Affairs Institute (ACPAI), has extensive experience in the financial, telecommunications, and media industries. Students attended a workshop with Teng that covered communications, marketing, and networking skills, and then enjoyed a lunch provided by Teng.

The students participated in a two-part workshop. In the first workshop, a seasoned educator in the pharmaceutical field shared her experience in business communications and presented tips and strategies for giving a professional impression. The second portion of the workshop was focused on résumé building, specifically for American businesses. Students learned how to improve their résumés with their strengths, skills, and experiences, while also receiving tips on proper proofreading and common mistakes to avoid.

New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer was previously the Borough President of Manhattan and has served as Comptroller since 2014. Stringer met with the students to discuss the responsibilities and challenges of managing the finances of the city.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is a globally admired and prestigious art venue, showcasing many of the most influential works of modern and contemporary art from around the world. In touring the museum, students received an overview of the major artistic movements of the last hundred years.

New York University is a private, nonprofit research university located in New York City’s famous Greenwich Village. A group of graduate students with diverse professional backgrounds gave CCIP students a presentation on diversity and inclusion, which was followed by a workshop in which students shared their personal experiences and were engaged in hypothetical situations. The students also received a tour of the campus.

ShopChop, a tech start-up that launched in September 2017, connects local businesses with people looking to rent space for their projects. The company founders talked to the students about their journey and the challenges they faced in building a NYC-based start-up, while also discussing professional networking, building a social media presence, and the vital skills for a young entrepreneur.

Founded in 1910 and located next to Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is one of New York’s most beautiful outdoor landmarks. Students explored the gardens, taking notes and photographing the natural beauty.

Dumbo (or DUMBO) is a rapidly evolving neighborhood located “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass,” which offers some of the most spectacular views of Manhattan. The students visited Dumbo before experiencing an unmissable New York City experience: strolling across the elevated pedestrian walkway of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge.

Hunter College is a respected public university with faculty members who hold PhDs from Yale, Princeton, and Johns Hopkins, among other prestigious academic institutions. The students met with the administrative coordinator of Hunter College’s English Department (she is also an adjunct professor, and a local political organizer and poet) to learn about political organizing and the contemporary lineage of the New York School of Poets.

Sing Tao Daily, which has its main headquarters in Hong Kong, is one of the world’s most widely read Chinese-language newspapers. Students visited the Lower Manhattan offices of the newspaper to learn about the challenges and career prospects of the industry, as well as the Chinese American readership.

Located at the World Trade Center site, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum is the foremost institution dedicated to exploring the causes and impact of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Students visited the museum to gain a greater understanding of the continuing significance of the tragedy.

Representative Grace Meng, who represents New York’s 6th congressional district in the borough of Queens, is an accomplished lawyer, the current Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee, and the first Asian American to represent New York in Congress. The students visited Meng’s office to learn about the House of Representative and the federal government.

At the start of each program, CCIP hosts a casual kick-off gathering at which the students and staff mingle and the program’s itinerary is discussed. The staff also presents important tips and recommendations for how to enjoy New York City, including “dos and don’ts”, safety tips, and cultural etiquette.
